The World Health Organization has released a report on urban air quality on May 11, 2016, and surprisingly Delhi is now not the most polluted city in the world!
The city ranks 11th in the list of 3000 cities from 103 countries when it comes to PM 2.5, and 25th in terms of PM 10 levels. PM 2.5 indicates Fine Particulate Pollution while PM 10 denotes Coarse Pollution Particles.
In 2014, Delhi was ranked the most polluted city in the world. Aravind Kejriwal, Delhi Chief Minister has been adopting many crucial steps to reduce the air pollution in the city, and this new report indicates that his efforts have turned fruitful.
Last year, World Health Organization had monitored just 1400 cities for its study, but this time, they have added a more 1600 which made the total count 3000.
Iranian City Zabol is considered as the most polluted city in the world according to this new study. Indian cities Gwalior and Allahabad are in the second and third spot, while the 6th and 7th ranks were fetched by Patna and Raipur respectively. Chinese cities Xintai and Baoding are in the 9th and 10th spots.
The study indicates that outdoor air pollution is rising at an alarming rate, and it has grown 8% globally over the past five years. Billions of people are now exposed to dangerous air, and it is undoubtedly a matter of concern.
The new revelation from WHO regarding the air health of the Indian Capital has given a new ray of hope to nature lovers.
The report clearly hints that more than 80% of the city people are inhaling air which is capable in creating adverse results in their respiratory health. According to an expert, WHO should have taken NOx into account too to get more accurate results regarding air pollution.
According to Dr. Carlos Dora from WHO, increase in air quality will benefit the human community in many ways, as it improves health and life expectancy of people living in these cities.
