Coolpad Cool Play 6 Review: Great Performance at Rs 14,999

Coolpad Cool Play 6 1

Coolpad released its new smartphone, Cool Play 6 in India with dual rear camera setup. The features don’t end there; the Cool Play 6 comes with 6GB RAM and USB Type-C to compete with some mid range smartphones in the market. The price of the Cool Play 6 is Rs. 14,999 in the Indian market. Here we have the gold version of Cool Play to review on PC-Tablet, let’s dig in.

Design

Coolpad took the same basic design and made some fresh and really appreciating changes into it. Coolpad Cool Play 6 has the same front panel design as every other cool pad smartphone. The front panel includes the 5.5 inches full HD IPS panel with a black border around it which provides an excellent minimal bezel look. Top and bottom bezel on the front panel is painted gold with capacitive navigation keys below the display.

The back of the phone is made entirely of metal with matte gold finish all over. The top and bottom part got the shiny antennae bands running across. The back panel also includes the dual camera setup with dual LED flash. Below the camera is the fingerprint sensor with mirror finish.

The top edge got the 3.5 mm audio port, left side has the SIM card tray, right edge has the power button, and the volume rocker and the bottom edge got the USB Type-C port and dual loudspeaker grill either sides of the USB port.

Specifications

  • 5.5 inch IPS Full HD display
  • 13MP + 13MP rear camera and 8MP front facing camera
  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 653 octa core processor, Adreno 510 GPU
  • 6GB RAM and 64GB ROM
  • Android 7.0 Nougat, Journey UI
  • Bluetooth 4.1, dual SIM, USB Type-C
  • Accelerometer, fingerprint sensor, proximity sensor, light sensor
  • 4000 mAh battery

Display and Software

Coolpad Cool Play 6 comes with a 5.5 inches Full HD display with 403 PPI. The display is enclosed by black borders which protect the display panel from any damage. These black borders also give the smartphone a “no side bezel” effect when the display is off. The content on this screen comes out crisp and clear with decent color contrast. The content seems to be washed out while out in the sun, full brightness helps a bit.

The phone runs on Android 7.1.1 Nougat out of the box with Journey UI layered on the top. The Journey UI is home screen only interface with no app drawer making the experience swift and lag free. The home screen also supports the shortcuts menu which can be accessed by holding down any icon on the home screen. Coolpad also rolled out an update for individual fixes for the Journey UI.

Camera

Cool Play 6 comes with dual camera setup at the back which comprises of two 13MP sensors with dual LED dual tone flash. For selfies, Cool Play 6 comes with an 8 MP front facing camera with f/2.2 aperture. The camera app interface is the same what we see in most of the Chinese branded smartphones.

The camera has four primary modes; photo, video, beauty and night with one additional SLR mode to capture the Bokeh effect. Cool Play 6 can shoot videos up to 4K resolution at 30 frames per second, but the stabilization is not present, not ever software based.

The pictures taken using the rear camera are coming out to be decent while in the right amount of light. But the pictures captured in artificial or low light conditions are a bit dull and lacks detail. The dedicated night mode in the camera app helps a lot, it brightens the pictures and adds a little bit more detailed information in the image.

The selfies are also good when captured in outdoor in lots of light, but in low light, beauty mode enhances the pictures a lot. The captured video quality is excellent, but because of the lack of stabilization of any kind, the videos are shaky.

Performance

Coolpad Cool Play 6 comes with Qualcomm Snapdragon 653 processor with eight cores running at a frequency of 1.4GHz. The processor is further paired with Adreno 510 GPU and 6GB RAM out of which 4GB is always available when idle. All the RAM related tasks like multitasking and gaming are pretty smooth on Cool Play 6.

The performance of Cool Play 6 is far above average, every app opens up quickly and loads faster. It can handle high graphics games easily and lag free. All thanks to a significant amount of RAM, the phone keeps every app running in the background. After performing some benchmarking on this smartphone, we got good results, but the phone heats up while benchmarking.

Battery performance is a bit disappointing; I was expecting full two days of battery backup even with intense usage of the device. It comes with 4000 mAh battery which is more than the flagship smartphones released recently. The charging time is less because of the USB Type-C port, and syncing data is also faster than the regular micro USB connection.

Pros

  • Dual camera setup
  • Sufficient RAM, 6GB
  • USB Type-C port

Cons

  • Battery performance is bit disappointing
  • Phone heats up while gaming

Verdict

Coolpad added the best hardware it can find for Cool Play 6 under Rs. 15,000 price tag. The dual camera setup isn’t the best feature of this smartphone, but it is obviously better than a single shooter. The performance part of the smartphone is amazing because of the 6GB RAM and Qualcomm Snapdragon processor.
