BlackBerry mid-range Android smartphones coming in July, confirms CEO

Canadian cellphone maker BlackBerry will unveil two mid-range Android Smartphone in July 2016. CEO John Chen revealed that he would tell more about the two devices in July but did not give any further details. There have been a couple of leaks of the two smartphones which has been codenamed “Hamburg” and “Rome”.

If leaks are to be believed, the two devices will be a touch screen phone. Hamburg will be manufactured by Alcatel. Chinese brand TCL, which makes Alcatel phones, has been roped in to make devices for the company in future.

Earlier, BlackBerry announced its first quarter results which do not look very encouraging. The device maker sold only 5,00,000 units globally which is down from 6,00,000 in the same quarter the previous year. It was a crippling 54% fall, and the company lost a whopping $670 million, the biggest loss in two years. The sales dropped by 39% as compared to previous year and stood at $400 million.

CEO John Chen is still optimistic and blamed the bad results on the strategic restructuring costs in the company. He added that BlackBerry could come out of the red and earn profits from its device sales. This optimism is not shared by others, and Facebook and WhatsApp have already announced that they are ending support for BlackBerry devices

BlackBerry and its business has been subject to numerous case studies around the globe. The Canadian device maker was once the leader in the mobile industry and dictated its writ around the world. However, with the arrival of touchscreen smartphone by Apple and later Samsung proved a death knell for the Canadian company.
