Better hologram developed to fight against fraud

The scientist is paying heed to the current problem of identity loss and in providing better entertainment quality. A group of scientist has come together to create better compact holograms which work across the spectrum of light and will improve protection against fraud.

It will help protect credit cards, driver’s license, etc. Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences researchers have programmed polarisation into compact holograms. Even though Holograms have been there for the last decade but it has been a struggle for the scientist to develop a better and more secure Hologram for the people.

Expressing his view on the need behind a better Hologram, Federico Capasso, Professor at Harvard University said “The best thing in the research is the fact that by using nanotechnology we have made Holograms that are highly efficient and will require minimum light to create an image. In addition to this, it adds another dimension to holograms which will be used to protect against counterfeiting and in displays.”

Federico Capasso, who is also part of this research, said: “Our holograms work like any other but the image produced depends on the polarisation state of the illuminating light, providing an extra degree of freedom in design for versatile applications”.

Holograms and digital photography are known to be quite the same but when it comes to capturing a field of light, but unlike photography Holograms also captures the phase of light. These features make Hologram appear three dimensional. So to protect this new technique Harvard has filed patents on this and is looking at how to use it for further commercial growth.

The team also built nanostructured silicon patterns on a glass substrate. This patterns also act as superpixels which will respond to a particular polarisation state of the incident light.

This new development will not only fight against the fraud but it also promises to make entertainment displays a better experience for the audience.
