disk cleaning software

Sometimes you just need to free up space on your PC. Perhaps you need the space or maybe your drive is working a bit clunkily. Well, regardless of the need, it can be dangerous to search for these types of decluttering programs.

A lot are straight up scams and have become an increasing way to get malware onto peoples’ systems since people are always looking for ways to get their PCs to run like new.

While you have to be careful, there are a few legitimate options out there that will do exactly what you want them to without the malware. Here, we’ve listed the best eight of that disk cleaning utilities. A lot of them even offer additional functionality that’s worth a look. So check them out.

CCleaner has been around for what seems like forever. It will clean junk off your hard drive and even offer to clean your registry for you. It’s super easy to use and won’t take up hardly any space on your disk. The interface won’t take you more than a second to learn, making for extreme ease-of-use. There are premium versions available that go deeper, but for most the free edition is enough.

SlimCleaner is quite similar to CCleaner in a lot of ways. The drive footprint is even lower than that of CCleaner, and it pretty much does all the same stuff. The interface looks a little more modern and cool, so that may appeal more to some. As always, a pro version is available, but it’s not worth the money.

WinOptimizer is another one of these contenders. It performs scans for junk data and offers to delete that data for you. This one even comes with support for making backups of files. It also works on your browser data.

Norton Utilities

Norton Utilities will manage your start-up programs and registry, reducing the load times of your PC at least in theory. This one is not free, and you’ll pay $49.99 to access its features. It offers disk defragmentation capability as well, but it frankly isn’t useful anymore due to Windows automatically doing this for you.

System Mechanic

Also not a free option, this one will set you back $49.95. This one is quite useful though and offers much more than just things Windows can already do. It will scan for and deal with problems automatically, or you can choose what to wipe or not. System Mechanic can defrag memory and even claims to be able to optimize your network connection.

Wise Disk Cleaner

Wise Disk Cleaner is another free option that gets in and scrubs deep. The functionality is similar to the drive cleaning function of CCleaner; only it goes deeper. It offers to remove old, unused service packs in Windows, flags large unused files taking up space, and more. It’s a solid option for those looking to free up space intelligently.

360Amigo System Speedup Free

Another CCleaner look-alike, 360Amigo offers all of the same functionality. It’s worth a look to see if you like the feel of it. Most people claim it reports as well as CCleaner or perhaps a little better.

PC Decrapifier

PC Decrapifier, despite the hilarious name, is a serious program. It offers the same disk cleaning functionality as a lot of the apps on this list in a much more simple package. Since drive clutter is its focus, it does it well. It cleans junk files as well as searching for trialware and other unnecessary garbage on your system.
