Apple announces new 21.5 inch iMac with 4K display, Magic Mouse 2, Trackpad, and Keyboard

Apple iMac

Finally, Apple has taken the big leap towards a 4K display with the new iMac. This update was much expected as it has been almost 2 years since Apple had last updated its major iMacs, which were without retina display at that time. The major setback at that time was the fact that the 21.5 inch iMac was left out without any update.

The entire iMac line-up has now been updated with the retina display and the new Skylake chips have been added to the bigger models. What surprised us was the fact that instead of launching the new range in the big WWDC 2015 event that happened back in September, the company chose to launch on 13th of October 2015.

Moving on to the updates. We have listed a few of the major ones.

  • The 21.5 inch iMac will get the 4K retina display for the first time. The resolution offered is at 4096X2304 with almost 9.4 million pixels that is more than 4 times the pixels that were available in the previous iMac.
  • The Haswell, 4th generation processors will be upgraded to Broadwell, the 5th generation processors as opposed to the 6th generation Skylake on the bigger devices. The main reason behind this decision is that the Skylake processor does not come with support for an integrated graphics card. The 21.5 inch iMac comes with enhanced Iris Pro Graphics.
  • The base model comes with 1 TB, 5400 RPM HDD storage. This is much slower than the fusion drive option that you will get at a higher price.
  • Magic Keyboard, Magic Mouse 2 and Magic Trackpad 2 are included with the iMac.
  • The overall form factor is believed to remain the same.

Apple Magic Keyboard

Here are key changes that are made to the accessories that come along with the iMac.

Apple Magic Mouse 2

  • The Keyboard, Magic Mouse 2 and Magic trackpad 2 is designed to be more comfortable as compared to the previous versions.
  • The major change that Apple has introduced is the fact that these peripherals will feature rechargeable batteries.
  • The Magic Trackpad 2 will feature Force touch capabilities like the ones that are introduced in the new Macbooks.
  • The overall form factor of the Keyboard has been reduced by 13% and the keys feature a new scissor mechanism.

The 27-inch iMacs will feature Skylake processors as they come with dedicated graphics. The whole iMac lineup has been revamped completely and it will be a joy to see how they perform in real life. The 21.5 inch iMac is launched at $1,499.
