We have probably heard of telecom companies slashing tariffs owing to the fierce competition they face for subscribers but the reversal of the same is rarely witnessed. Leading Telecoms in India like Airtel and Vodafone have stepped up to increase call rates by scaling down discount offers.

This could trigger other companies to join the same league as in the earlier past too, mobile companies have increased their services rates in about a fortnight or month following change in rates of their rivals.

Airtel cuts short validity period of voucher

With the change in rates, Sunil Bharti Mittal-run Airtel has gone in for a second hike in internet tariffs this year. The telecom major has increased mobile services rates of both internet and calls under certain schemes. Airtel has reduced the validity of its Rs 125 mobile internet pack from 28 to 21 days.

It has also reduced benefit on recharge of promotional packs. Earlier the company’s recharge of Rs46 voucher limited STD and local call rates to 45 paise per minute, while now it signals a hike by 4 paise, costing 50 paise per minute.

Similarly, Bharti Airtel has cut short minutes of talk time. Now on recharge of Rs 48, one could get just Rs 38 of talk time, while earlier users got full value of talk time. Other companies expected to fall in the same line are IDEA cellular and Vodafone India Ltd. The industry accuse tariff hike on high outgo on purchasing spectrum as the sole reason for the change in policy.

Airtel dominates Indian mobile phone services market with over 22 per cent share. It has over 20 crore subscribers. The move is bound to generate some reaction from the public. How the companies would deal with it, remains to be seen. What are your thoughts on this, let us know them in the comments section below.
