TRAI reports India has now over 1.2 Billion active mobile users

According to the sectoral regulator TRAI, the telecom subscriber base in India has now crossed 1.2 billion mark until the month May. This is the remarkable number which indicating the urge of new Indian consumers to switch to wireless communication from landline network. As per the latest report which suggests that the growth was led by the addition of 6.23 million net subscribers in the mobile services segment.

According to TRAI report “The number of telephone subscribers in India increased from 1,198.89 million at the end of Apr-17 to 1,204.98 million at the end of May 17, thereby showing a monthly growth rate of 0.51%. The urban subscription increased from 695.99 million at the end of Apr-17 to 697.06 million at the end of May-17, and the
Rural subscription increased from 502.90 million to 507.92 million during the same period.”

Total wireless subscribers increased from 1,174.60 million at the end of Apr-17 to 1,180.82 million at the end of May-17, thereby registering a monthly growth rate of 0.53%.

Reliance Jio successfully added 4.7 million new customers which accounted 75% of overall net subscriber addition in the mobile service segment.

Here is the list shows the list of no. of newly adding customers to the respective telecom service provider:

  • Bharti Airtel- 2.09 million.
  • BSNL- 1.35 million.
  • Vodafone- 1.13 million.
  • Idea Cellular- 0.19 million
  • Reliance Communication- 0.17 million
  • Aircel-0.17 million

The private telecom service provider held 90.96 % of market share of wireless subscribers, Whereas, the PSU like BSNL and MTNL had 9.04% of market share. Here is the list which explains the market share and net additions in wireless subscriber base.

  • Bharti Airtel- 23.59%
  • Vodafone- 17.86%
  • Idea- 16.62%
  • Reliance Jio- 9.94%
  • BSNL- 8.74%
  • Aircel-7.68%
  • Reliance – 6.97%
  • Telenor- 4.07%
  • TATA – 3.35%
  • MTS- 0.37%
  • MTNL- 0.31%

The top five wired broadband service providers in May:

  • BSNL- 9.80 million
  • Bharti Airtel- 2.09 million
  • Atria Convergence Technologies- 1.20 million
  • MTNL- 0.99 million
  • You Broadband- 0.64 million.

The report said “During the month of May-17, a total of 5.37 million requests were received for MNP (Mobile number portability). With this, the cumulative MNP requests increased from 277.72 million at the end of Apr-17 to 283.09 million at the end of May-17, since the implementation of MNP.”
